I will be surprised if its the alternator ... i wouldnt expect it in a 4 year old bmw which reasonable mileage on the clock.
Could be the battery ... as I know batteries last abotu 4-5 years.

Anyone other idea ?

There is a light sensor somewhere in the cabin (not sure where) which adjusts the brightness automatically. Perhaps it has a fault?

This might be your answer: http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=73343&st=4

"I think the brightness is also controlled by the solar position sensor (the thing that sticks up from the center speaker.) I've seen the display change from dim to bright repeatedly when driving on a road with bright street lights spaced about in a specific pattern..."

Thanks Dranged, that seems to be my answer ! I guess I wont mess with it as it doesnt seem to be a problem. I just wanted to make sure it wasnt a sign of things to go wrong.

Thanks all for your input !

It is indeed the display reacting to ambient lighting conditions, totally normal and a good trick.

Thanks for confirming

I might try and locate the sensor and give it a clean in case light isnt geting through properly.

The sensor that adjust the light in the cluster and the MFD ( Multi Funtions Display ) is build in togehter with the rain sensor , the "clear" piont you can see when looking at the windshield from out in the black aerea by the rain sensor.
