Whoohoooo! I hit 1,200 miles tonight.
The owner's manual states that "once you have driven 1,200 miles, the engine and vehicle speeds can be gradually increased."
Yah, riggggght. Gradual, as in zero to 100 mph in 13 seconds, I say.

In D mode - In M mode
In midrange rpms - In spilled cups of coffee
In gallons - In miles

How do you measure the maximum allowed?
How about Steptronic M3?
How about under 100 mph?
How about never having fun?

It seems a bit silly to me to think that keeping revs below 4500 at 1199 miles is good for the car while revs above 4500 at 1200 miles are no problem? Obviously BMW has to choose breakin numbers, but I wonder what the actual mileage of concern is? Also, what about those of you who did not strictly adhere to the breakin schedule - any vehicle problems?

BMW was probably conservative with the numbers... its probably ready at 800 miles and should be slowly reved up at incriments of 100rpms every 100miles or so. But thats more confusing so why not just say 1200miles and then rev up slowly... and if people dont follow that its no problem.
As for those that dont follow the procedures its not much of a problem either... it "can" be beaten from day one. I know some people who believe in break it in hard since new... a friend of mine did that with his car since day one he warmed up the engine and drove it HARD as he can FULL throttle for 20 miles and his cars perfectlly fine right now and is pretty powerful for that matter... Dynoed HP more than it was rated...
You wont see any engine problem i dont tink... maybe when it hits 250,000 miles... haha while those who broke in the car properly can get 300,000 miles but you can only get 250,000

I think theres some truth in that.The car engines should be high tech enough so i dont think you wuld need a 1200 miles break in.Prolly about a 100-200 miles break in for me!

My Ride: 2006 525i, Titanium Silver Metallic, Gray Dakota Leather, Poplar Grain Wood Trim, Steptronic, Active Steering, Premium Package, Cold Weather Package, On-Board Navigation, Heated Front Seats, Xenon Adaptive Headlights, Satellite Radio, Euro Rear Reflectors
I had to do about a 200 mile drive the day that I picked up my 06 525i and asked the dealer what my limit was on my break in period. He proceeded to tell me "This engine can't be hurt, so feel free to drive it like you want to."
I was floored by the response that he had given me. I decided to follow my own instincts and still keep it in its cage for the first 500m.
Ever try to drive a brand new 2006 525i 65mph in the right lane on the New Jersey Turnpike? It's the most frustrating thing ever.

Nooooo noooo noooo noooo this isnt a honda... dont do that! the "MAX" speed recommended by BMW is under 95mph during break in... not 65... put your foot down!!!
