Supposedly the idrive was upgraded physically in mid-year 2009 with the addition of the direct type buttons. However, it didn't get a better software package until model year 2010.


Assuming these facts are correct...(are they?)


Can the 2009 software be upgraded to the "good" 2010 software if I end up buying a 2009 model that is equipped with the extra buttons?

Quick overview. after the LCI update buttons were added to the control panel (not the idrive controller). then sometime later (not sure exactly) buttons were added to the idrive knob. but the "good software" your talking about wasn't implemented until the 2010 model year but the update isn't software its hardware CCC->CIC. So in short no a software update wont change the CCC interface to the CIC interface.
