I noticed sluggish performance in the first minute or so of iDrive operation in my recently purchased Pre-LCI ('06). I recently had a '10 LCI e60 loaner and noticed that the new idrive software update operates quickly upon start and responds quickly throughout. My iDrive is definitely sluggish after startup and overall just does not feel as snappy as the new system.
Is this just part of the upgrades with the new system or could my iDrive have an issue? Has anyone determined if it is possible to upgrade to the new iDrive system?

Yep, sounds like part of the upgrade. The performance you describe on your '06 is normal. Even my LCI behaves this way. It is only the 2010 (U.S. MY) which has a new iDrive system with the upgraded hardware, hence the performance of the iDrive on your 2010 loaner...

I see. Well as on old iDrive user, the new iDrive system is a huge improvement. As I said, it is much quicker at startup and throughout. The GUI is much more intuitive and seems to be much brighter and sharper. They addressed the long list scrolling issue that the old controller has with its haptic system that gives resistance at the end of a list. The new controller quickly realizes that you are trying to move a long distance in a list based on how quickly you rotate the controller. This was very noticeable when manually tuning radio stations and entering Nav destinations. I will say that the controller does not feel as "quality" as my old controller. I have the silver controller with the black leather centerpiece. It feels solid in my hand. The new controller is smaller and feels much lighter and more plasticky. It definitely does not give the feeling of class/quality that my old controller does.

Just to clarify, it is not an LCI vs pre-LCI issue. MY 2008 and 2009 (U.S.) which are LCI cars do not have the new iDrive system. While anything is possible, I'm sure the cost of upgrading is likely cost prohibitive...
