My Ride: 2008 550I LOADED, all options except HUD and NV
Default

So yesterday I drove my car for some short errands near my house. Everything was fine.
This morning I get in the car and start it up to get ready to come to work. The iDrive screen keeps going black then flashing the "BMW" screen about every 20-30 secs. I stopped to get my coffee and did the iDrive reset, nothing changed, any ideas? This is pretty annoying, and I noticed that when the screen goes black so do the buttons for the CD and DVD drives. WTF?!?!?!

Well since it's a 2005'er, what about your battery, replaced it already?

My iDrive screen did the same before throwing the infamous all-out errors when my battery was dying...

Good luck!

Hmm, have to check it. Thanks I'll take a look, wonder if it's covered under CPO? (doubt it)
Also, is battery registration required?

Ok, how about this as a replacement. The parts store is local (about 3 mins from me) and they have it instock. Battery

I just replaced my 5 year old OEM battery, as a preventative measure, with an OEM BMW battery rated 720 CCA / 90 amp hours (same as what was in my car originally).
The local parts store, Batteries Plus and Sears all had batteries with less CCA's than my original battery so I decided to just get it from BMW since I was going there anyway for a complimentary fall checkup.
Paid $150.00 after tax.
FYI Sears priced me at $145 for a battery with 690 CCA's and Batteries Plus at $90 for a battery with 620 CCA's.

I will not be registering it since it seems registration is only required if you decide to replace your battery with one that has different specs. And I don't think BMW will even try to register a non OEM battery.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip, I may check out the OEM battery then, if they can be had for about the same price then I'll just get an OEM one and be done with it.

I replaced my battery last March with OEM AGM battery. I used to work at a BMW Dealer where I have my car serviced. Needless to say I have a few contacts that I trust. The Service Manager advised me to have it registered so that our car computer will acknowledge it has a new battery. The charging on the car progresses as the battery gets older and if you don't register a new battery, the car charges your new battery with the same rate as your old one and therefore might result to shorter life span of your new battery. After paying good money for a new battery, I consider the registration as an added insurance.
