My Ride: '06 530i M Sport N52
i've had my latest e60, '06 530i msport n52 for 4months now, 37k miles when i bought it and the dealer said he changed the oil at that time so i suppose safe to assume the level was correct. thing is, i've had to top up the oil twice, @ 1l a time as per idrive message, after only doing 4.5k. i do like to drive it pretty hard sometimes as i do most of my driving late at night but is using this amount of oil unusual? the car shows no sign of smoking whatsoever and runs like a total dream? i guess it's probably normal to use a little oil if your gassing it but 2l in 4.5k miles?? i'm gonna do an oil change next week, castrol edge 0w30 ( as well as ebc redstuff all round and ate blue racing fluid, new plugs, k&n filter and mtec v2.1 ae's )

I bought my 530 back in February and mine consumes 1L for ever 1200km approx. I phoned 4 BMW dealerships and 2 said that it was unusual to do that and 2 said that it was totally normal for an e60 to consume that much oil..but yet all 4 BMW dealerships recommended Castrol Synthetic 5W30. I think it's unusual but I don't know anymore...I dont know if this was any help, but I'm just letting you know that mine consumes alot of oil too.

i never got this problem i use 0w40 mobile1 and change it every 5000km
but my sister got x6 35 as i remember she got this problem several times and i called the dealer and they said its normal
as i know its normal for turbo cars only.

It is NOT normal. It is in the range of normal now but its trending somewhere bad-its a sign something is slowly leaking in the system. I would say your gasket is likely due for replacement.
I have the same 07 n52 530 and when I first got it the thing burned oil but after 10k miles it has never burned an ounce between 12k oil changes and I drive hard/rev high>
I would be preventitive and find the problem rather than letting it get "abnormal" and then being stuck with all the damage its done.
Its also common with the magnesium valve covers on your engine that crack or become damaged and leak oil. That si why the replaced post 07 engines with plastic ones and not magnesium covers.. I would start there and inspect your magnesium cover. YOu would need to take the plastic top off and look at the actual engine

It is number 1 on that picture. The cylinder head cover. Either your gasket or the cover is cracked or does crack VERy frequently on these --before they chanegd to plastic. This is your most likely culprit.
I would check it out, its quite accessible. But remember you need to buy new screws to put it back on-they cannot be re-used as they are aluminum to mag connection.
Also if you are adding oil that frequently you do NOT use Castrol 5/30---unless it is EURO castrol 5w30. The US version is totally different and not adequate. Its ok if you add a quart every 10k miles but not at the rate your adding. Just buy the bmw 5w30 and use it-no more expensive. Your other option is the Mobil 1 0w40.
