Interesting. I'll watch for it, b/c my in-service date is late October. I guess these cars are now idiot proof.

My car displayed xxxx miles until oil service--until a year came around (the mileage had not been reached), then I-drive had a message that the service was due.

Watch all you want... but the does not tell you to change your oil at the 1 year mark.

That's why I asked, to inquire what others knew about the topic. My service booklet is silent, and since this is a blog of shared expiriences I wanted know what others knew.

So what does trigger the engine oil service message light? I thought it was based on a combination of miles driven and duration of time (hours in operation?).

My 530i was delivered Christmas 2005. I opted to have the oil changed at 2,000 miles in June 2006 and requested the dealer not to reset the service indicator. I currently have just under 4,000 miles and the oil service message now appears. So was the message triggered by the elapsed year since the initial oil change or that it's nearing two years and due for an oil change? Or does it also take into account that it has low mileage for the past couple of years?

Dealers are often ill informed about the terms of the BMWNA Full Maintenance agreement. That being said, my question really relates to the maintenance requirements. Is an oil change due after one year? Some say that the iDrive will address this, so I'll have to wait until the one-year anniversary, which is in about a week.

ask your dealer.

some dealers will cover it when its been a year but the service indicator says you're ok, and then some dealers won't.

No, you don't have to change the oil now, especially when it's a leaser.

The iDrive tells you when.

My 530i is going to be 1 year old soon, but because the mileage is low, the service interval indicator doesn't say that an oil service is due for a long time. My last 530i (an E39) required an oil change at least once a year, but the service booklet on my present car is silent about the topic.

If mileage is low, is an oil change required at the one-year mark?
BMW are the experts and have tested the engine etc, so why not just wait for the service light to come on, as long as you check the oil and make sure its topped up all will be fine.

My dealer (Herb Chambers in Boston) told me to bring it in after a year in service. They changed oil & filter yesterday, but oil service indicator said it still had 2800 miles to go. I asked about it, and they said they're going to change it again when the service indicator tells them to do so. So I'll have had two free oil changes in about 15 months. They said they can't reset the service interval unless it runs down to zero, or something like that. Seems odd to me, but I can't complain much as I'm sure the N52 engine likes fresh oil.

That is exactly how its suppose to be done. Your dealer is good. Following the books.
