I have had the fault indicator (exclamation point in dash) on for a couple of weeks. When I check the i-drive service, everything checks out normal. Now I notice that when I first start the car a "oil level sensor fault" message appears for 2-3 seconds and then disappears. I called my dealer and they said I should check the oil level. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks!

I haven't seen this problem but it's nice to know there's a sensor for the sensor!
Since I've never even seen the low oil warning light in over 6 years of driving these cars, I was beginning to think that these sensors don't work...

I had this happen on my old MY02 530. The message would appear only for a few seconds if your oil is low but not too low, and permanently if your oil was low.
All you have to do is add some oil (not oil change). I did it myself. I think it depends on the way you drive, my last car was a manual and I kept the car always over 2000 rpm, and I was a very spirited driver. I think this uses the oil faster. I had to top up the oil twice during the 3 years I owned the car.

I checked my oil (dealer also suggested) and it is in allowable range (just above half). This shouldn't cause the system check message to appear, would it? Thanks.

Hi,
I once had the same problem last summer. It has - as I think - nothing to do with the oil-level itself.
They could not tell if the sensor was broken or it was a software-problem. So they changed the sensor and the software.
I would visit the dealer.

I had this problem, or possibly the oil pressure sensor (I'd have to investigate) and it caused my car's CAS computer module to stop working. That in turn stopped the fuel pump completely, which killed my car in heavy single lane traffic. The car had to be towed away after an hour waiting for the tow truck.
So, maybe it's worth taking it to the dealer to get it checked into.

i just got the same warning today about the oil needing to be changed. However, i've only had the car for 6 weeks and 1800 miles. Called the dealer, they said to check the oil level (i did, it's ok) but probably a faulty sensor. Will be bringing the car in to the dealer to fix/replace sensor (i presume). i'll let you know what they find.
