It was a bad oil sensor afterall.

The service group at first could not duplicate the "too much oil" screen. Once I showed them how, they changed the oil and put in the proper amount ... but it still read too high. So they changed the oil sensor and all is well.

They gave me a 2006 325i for the day as a loaner ... very nice to drive with decent prep and great handling. But the power and grace of the 5er are unmatched.
Hmmm, I just back from my dealer with the same situation. Got the oil changed last week and I noticed the "too high" message over the weekend. Today they drained the oil and verified the amount - put back all but a quart and noted the sensor still said "too high", so it another trip for me back to the dealer to get the new sensor installed...

Jon.

Too much oil can be a potentially huge problem.

What will happen is that the oil with come into contact with the crankshaft and then be whipped into a froth. This then will be sucked into the rest of the engine. Robbing the engine of oil in the needed places.

Next you will have the pleasure of making a nice payment on a new engine.

After reading this I am still wondering why I can't get the oil screen on the idrive to show the oil level... It's been over 2000 miles since last oil change and still the screen doesn't show me anything. Does the engine have to be off to see it?

No. What does the screen show?

You have to drive it for a few minutes (at least 5 minutes) and then check it with engine on (e.g. during red light)
