My Ride: On Order as of May 6- 2007 530i Titanium Grey and Grey Leather, with Sport Package, Premium Pkg, Cold Pkg. 2006 Porsche Boxster
Thumbs up

I enjoy changing the oil in my one of three cars and using the best available oil and filters. I ran across these filter magnet products and wonder what y'alls thoughts are on the actual improvement on engine wear that it might have. If at all.

I figure most manufacturers would make a premium filter with such magnets or feature. But then again these products are pretty pricey.

These are on the market since 2000 and although the principle is a neat idea it won't work in BMW engines as the magnets are applied on the outside of a screw on type filter. BMW filters are designed to be placed in the aluminum case of the engine.

The next best thing is to use a magnetic plug and you will achieve very similar results for far less $$$.

Without trying to re-open a topic that has created a huge controversial discussion in this forum, the best insurance for your engine is to change oil/filter every 3-5k miles. If you lease the car and don't plan to keep it beyond the typical 3 year lease and you don't really care what the next owner will get, then the 15k miles oil change recommended by BMW is just fine.
