Default oil filter lock

Hi,

I am looking to start doing my own oil changes on my 2006 530i.
Can someone please help me identify if this part in this link, will work for my car?

Please and Thanks

Great deal on Assenmacher V410 at ToolTopia.com

I am not sure if that will work or not, but I know this will: BMW Parts and BMW Accessories | Bavarian Autosport

I also saw a set of three with different sizes sold at harborfreight.com. Compare the size from Bavauto.com for correct fitment.

Have fun.

Yes, it will work. I use the same one and the quality of that particular socket is much better than some of the cheaper stamped steel products on the market.

Thats correct and don't get carried away with over tightening it which is easy to do with that tool. If you do, you risk cracking the cap and having a leak. i just use a good snug approach and all is ok, otherwise is you are unsure, use a torque wrench.

In addition to the above suggestions, when you are changing the oil filter, put some oil on the large o-ring that's inside the cap. As you tighten the cap, few drops of oil on that o-ring goes a long way for cap turning smoothly and prevents the oil leaks.

One last suggestion. Take a look at the location of the o-ring on the cap before you replace it. It goes in a specific groove, not against the top lip. Placing it at the wrong location can result in a leak since it will get pinched.

Be sure and use a torque wrench on the cap and drain plug. If I remember correctly, the cap torque of 25 Nm is printed in the cap. That torque specification is the same for the drain plug also. You must replace the copper crush washer on the drain plug. You must start by hand the drain plug or risk cross threading it. You should use a torque wrench to tighten it or you risk stripping it. The last oil change by BMW under maintenance on my wife's X5 got cross threaded. Of course I didn't find out about it until a year later when I did my first DIY oil change on it. I had to use a thread renewal kit called Time-Sert to fix it up. Trust me, you do not want to be there.

Don't forget to wear gloves, take off your nice white dress shirt and tie!

Be sure to put AAA, nearest BMW dealer phone number and 911 on speed dial!

Make sure a case of cool beer is stocked in your refrigerator just in case you needed a break to compose yourself; and figure out how the hell you are going to fix what you just broke.

Well, at least that's what my girlfriend (the other one) told me when I first started fixing my car...
