In case anyone was interested, I just ordered a filter cap removal tool from my dealer for the N52/N54 engines for $13. I've seen around that people say they are paying $30-$40 from their dealers and ECS is charging $23 I think. I know a lot of people are just using the rubber strap tool that you can get an most hardware stores but for $13 why not get the actual tool.

Because if the rubber strap tool already does the job that $13 can get spent on something else

This is good info though for anyone doing this for the first time.

But I don't have a rubber strap tool right now. I went to go change the oil on my "new to us" X3(N52 engine) and found out that it doesn't have the same filter cap as my e60(M54).

^^^Then if this is the only car you change the oil on then purchase it - but when you part ways with the X3 you won't need it anymore.

There are usually 3 cars in my garage so I try to find universal tools for a particular job whenever possible.

I see where you're coming from. Right now I just have my e60 and my wife's X3.
