What's considered allowable oil consumption for an E60 530i.

Assuming sensor is correct I have need to add 1 qt after 2500 miles.

Did you check the oil level (dipstick) when you first got the car? It may have been low to start with.

Have 4,000 miles on my 2005 530i and the oil level hasn't moved from day one.

I have a 2006 530i. Unless I missed something, I don't believe I have a dip stick on the new engine.

I just woke up so you'll have to excuse me if I appear a bit CRANKY, but it would help those that provide responses if you would put your car's specifics in your signature so that people can provide a more informed response

Not withstanding the experience of turnbowm, as a general rule you are more likely to see higher oil consumption in the initial breakin period and should improve, if u have been following the recommended guidelines contained in the manual and probably briefed by the salesman upon delivery.

Neither of you mentioned how you drove, type of conditions (all city / all hiway), transmission types, etc. This would help establish if similar conditions get similar results and would establish both oil and gas consumption for you in the long run. And, if done properly, you will see improvement in both and have a more satisfying experience in the long run

I know the new lightweight 6 engine has no dipstick so I am not sure how accurate the electronic monitoring system is. Some of our more recent 06 model forum owners need to chime in here as well.

Point of interest for u, E60 M5 expects to use 1 qt/1000km during breakin. But after 5000km breakin period it reportedly improves significantly.

I am at ~3500 miles, no oil warning. I'll have to check the diagnostic screen later to see if it shows anything other than full. Manual transmission, mix of driving but majority is highway, 70-80mph. Hot and humid weather, not much dirt, although I took delivery of the car in April during the height of pollen season.

BTW, the engine is continuing to break in. Gas mileage is improving as is power.

<_<
I had the same problem with my '06 -525 after the dealer did an oilchange (5000mi) it lasted 3500 miles until the indicator was 1/2 way down again.

Responses like this really help to nail down the issue. I have not done a search, so I am not sure what the idrive looks like for the new 6 engine oil level indicator. I would also expect some pretty detailed instructions in the new Owners manual on this issue.

For Bimmer06530i you want to make sure you do not overfill since you cannot tell really accurately without dipstick. I would want to be slightly under and not over.

rainer716 08-11-2005 03:21 PM

I forgot to mention a few things: I have an '06 525i automatic built in April...I actually was there the week it was beeing built (how cool is that).
After about 2700 miles the low oil indicator came on telling me to add 1 quart. I went to the dealer they added 1 quart. They actually did not trust the iDrive and did an software update. They added 1 quart and sent me on my way. 900 miles later the oil was low again this time they decided to do a full oilchange (something I requested) and opened a case file with BMW. It has been 3000 miles and I am 1/2 way down on my leven and I expect to get the warning message within the next 500 to 700 miles. I drive about 60% highway and 40% city I do not "push" the car I drive moderately.
Hope this helps
Rainer

On my 06 530i you have to use the I-drive to check the oil. Check your manual and it will tell you how to do it. As I remember you go to "service" first then scroll up and across one to "check engine oil"...........it takes about 5 miles to get a reading if you do it your first start of the day.

Hope this helps

How can you top it up properly without a dip stick? On the 545 the stick is up next to the firewall.
