Oil changed during oil cooler replacement...?
'08 535i, 69K miles, 6-speed manual, sports package: I just had my oil cooler replaced by the dealer...the work order says "replaced oil cooler and corrected oil level". My car is due for the oil change around now...and I was wondering if I need to go ahead and do it, or if they drained/replaced it when they replaced the oil cooler. Any body know if an oil drain is required for replacing the cooler?

Probably not required as they can quickly remove the line and seal it quickly.
Did they charge you for oil and filter? If so they probably changed it. |
good point...no mention of oil or filter...guess I'll proceed with the oil change then...thanks for the response.

When oil cooler is replaced, small amount of oil is lost (in the oil cooler). They must've replenished that small amount.

I have never really thought about where the oil lines run to the cooler, how the temperature bypass valve is involved and if the cooler is mounted above the sump, which would allow gravity to drain the cooler to the sump after the engine stops. I'll have to look the next time I do an oil change. :) |
