1st post here.
This is my first BMW and I am about to change the oil on my 06 530i.
Now, I have changed the oil on all of my vehicles but when I purchased the oil filter for the Beemer, I was somewhat confused by just getting a "filter" element and not the casing or anything like that.
So, are there any DIY's out there for the oil change? I have searched and actually looked through all pages in the DIY section and found nothing to show me how to do the oil change. Im sure it cannot be that hard so please go easy on me.
I appreciate any assistance. Thank you.

re-use the housing when you remove it...search for oil change, there is a DIY for it, just look at the last page and move forward since it was covered back in the days. Just did mine recently, was very simple although the saving was not much comparing to bringing it to the dealer though but I like to do things myself to ensure it's done correctly.

try this
oil change DIY
You only get a paper filter with no casing because in our cars you change the filter out under the hood beside the engine and just replace the filter part.

Thank you so much. I appreciate it. It seemed like it should be pretty easy by everything I could see. I just couldnt fathom paying $120 + Tax for this.
Take care you guys. Again, thank you.

hey i got the same model as you. i changed the oil myself with a buddy last weekend took 45 minutes and runs great. we drove the car on some rhino ramps from autozone. 30.00 bux. popped the hood. crawld underneath removed the oil plug cover (3 nuts) put a catch pan underneath. cracked loose the oil nut. 17mm i think. oil shoots out sideways so some oil may get underneath the belly skirts. let drain for a good 20 minutes then put the plug nut back in. cracked the oil fitler loose with a ratchet strap from autozone. kinda a pain in the dick. the filter is on top of the engine up front in the middle near the radiator. its a round black cap. just loosen it pull it out prelube the oring swap orings and replace. we filled her up with mobil 1 syntheic about 7 quarts. let her run for a lil then checked for leaks and read the oil level on the i drive. runs like a top filter 14 bux oil 55 bux
