Default Oil Catch Can Installation

Hi

I have just bought an E61 5 series. Very happy with it. However, the other day I pulled up and smelt burning oil. RAC came out and diagnosed oil from the breather system accumulating in the boost pipe and leaking out due to a defective seal.

I can replace the seal no problem, but having done some research, it appears that this is common in all diesel engines due to emissions control. I found this:

DIY: Installing the Mann ProVent CCV Filter - TDIClub Forums

Which appears to be a good solution to the problem. However.. having just interrogated the dealer, it appears that the breather system is built into the head cover and therefore cannot be accessed or modified. Does anyone else have experience of this and a way around it please?

I am mechanically minded - have changed head gaskets before etc.

Many thanks in advance,

Jonathan
