Hi,

I have had my 530xi for approx one week. Driving conditions has been varied (city, open road, highway). When I picked up the car I checked the oil level in iDrive and it was indicating the top level. Today, 350 miles later the oil level indicates only three "segments" lit from low level.

Is this normal?

P.S.
Having heard about Audi cars that literally drink oil but I was under the impression that BMW engines were better. (sorry, I meant much better:-)

Some have reported some usage (up to 1 quart) during break-in while others (most) have reported very little usage during break-in. I believe over 99 % say, however, that after break-in little to no oil usage in many thousands of miles. Personally, I believe I am down like 1/4 of 1 quart in first 11,000 miles. Since I still have dip stick, I could not say how that would appear in the iDrive only oil consumption meter.

For the N52, experiences have been mixed. Some required oil, others have not. My car is a bit over 6 months old and has a bit less than 5200 miles on it. Still indicates full for oil.

My 545i experience may not help much, but .... I did not check my oil when the car was new. I now have about 3,500 miles. I checked today, having seen your topic, and the iDrive shows 9,000 mililiters = slightly more than 8.5 quarts. The 545i's capacity in quarts is listed as 8.5. I can only assume that I have burned very little oil during break in. Assuming the car was filled between the first and second dip-stick marks, on the low side, then I might have burned 1/2 quart. Wish I had checked when the car was new.

I Have just 5000 miles on the clock and my oil warning came on a couple of weeks ago. A week later it said I was below the minimum so I topped up with 1 litre of oil. The warning has not come up again as yet.

I know that I have a diesel and it consumed about 2 quart in 15000 miles. It looks normal. We must not forget that the new BMW castrol oil LL01 and LL04 are very very fluid to allow Valvetronic to work fine: 0 W 30. So it is logic to consume a little bit oil.

I have a 06 530i and it used one quart the first 1200 miles, it is getting better as the more miles I drive. It is now getting 1400 miles for one bar.
