.......actually in a longitudal engine Audi (A4, A6, A8, as well as in the VW Passat B5), everything is much further towards the front than in a BMW. This is because by design, Audi's Torsen system has the front axle line located behind (toward the back of) the flywheel plane. In a BMW it is in front of the flywheel.....
Mmm - I'm not sure that this impacts the footwell's size. In theory yes, and it may actually leave the designer with more freedom in terms of pedal placement; in practice, A6 and Passat (which BTW have virtually the same external dimensions as the E60) have very similar sized footwells. Just sit in one...(actually - this is a good weekend project: go to the nearest Audi/VW dealership with a tape measure... )

perhaps I should install a second dead pedal next to the standard one to solve the ergonomics

Nah you should install a working third pedal and change that lever in the middle console to make it move in 7 directions

OK, here we go. The one on the left side is from a BMW 5 Series E60. The one on the right side is from an Audi A6 C5. Both are from the driver's side. The tiles are 13" X 13":

You win.

I also owe you a drink as you saved me the time and expense of going to an Audi dealer and pretend to have an interest.
