I understand what most people are saying that it may be a normal thing, however a couple of points: if the car did not have the smell and it developed the smell after the service, you may want to log a complaint with the dealer. I mean, what kind of smell is it? Is it a mildew smell? Is it a gas smell? Is it an oil smell? Could they have left the oil cover loose and now oil is splashing on heated surfaces and you smell it?

As a side note, my E46 has this musty smell after turning the engine on if I had the AC on before I shut off the engine. The recommended procedure by BMW is to shut off the AC a couple of minutes before arriving to your destination and just let the fan run without the AC engaged to dry out the ducts. It seems to work most of the time. I have not had this smell in the E60 mostly because (my guess) the AC is always on.

Guys, I have had 3 series, 5 series and 7 series BMWs and all from various years. Unfortunately starting back as far as 2001, is about when I had the first A/C smell start up. Its not so much with the A/C on, but it is when the A/C is turned off and you are on vent.

The only way to get rid of it is BMW does a complete cleaning of your system but eventually it comes back. Very annoying and I have had several service consultants give all kinds of various recommendations, but unfortunately none have worked.

We just bought a 2006 550i yesterday and I didnt notice it on this car.................yet but I am betting it is just a matter of time.
