There's been a few posts regarding this issue in the past. I think the problem has something to do with condensate or stale moisture sitting in the duct system.

They did this while my car was in for fuel line clip recall (and headlight bracket), but as the notice points out, it comes back. I can already smell a little after just a week. Wish there was some permanent resolution. Have seen posting from others with earlier models complaining about this as well, seems to be an issue w/ BMWs. I've never had on any other vehicle I've owned.
