Default An odd smoking at idle from my 545i

Ok, so i purchased this car from a co-worker in December and it had 139k miles on it and it now has 146k. For starters the car has the increased emissions warning but i am baffled at the smoking from the exhaust when the car idles for a while. If i am sitting still for 10+ minutes the car starts to smoke. The car burns very little oil...maybe a half of a quart every 2k+ miles and it does not waste coolant. Any ideas what could be causing this?

welcome to the v8s of BMW. They all do it with excessive idling and looks horrible cause the longer you do it the bigger the PLum of smoke is...there is a A Valve cover breather vent that's replaceable On both cheap an easy fix you can buy I'm at Bavarian motorsports

The engine needs new valve stem seals. Common problem with the BMW V8's. Worst case scenario is new valve guides as well, but much less likely than just the valve stem seals. AGA seals a kit to make the task easier/less costly.

Your emissions warning (CEL) is most likely due to clogged secondary air ports. AGA also sells a cleaning kit for this problem. Beware, the kits are not cheap, but cheaper than any other alternative.

Good luck. Be prepared for the truth. Just do a search on this site to see what is involved and what the mostly likely cause is.
