I went to the dealer because my maintanence warranty will expire next week. I figure I'll have them take care of a couple things before its over. I wanted them to update the I drive so I would have the greyish blue color instead of the ugly brown on the I drive screen, I also heard the update will make it respond quicker. I also wanted them to see if they can update the software so I can now listen to mp3's in my car. Of course my wonderful dealer gets back to me and tells me if no error codes come up they can't upgrade the software but for a nice $100 plus tax they will be more than willing to do it for me. Just another great experience by BMW.

Unfortunately the next closest dealer would be about 50 minutes away from me. But you know what thats a good suggestion and I will call them up tomorrow to check.

Unfortunately I think you will find your dealer's response to be the norm. Unless you have a great relationship with your service advisor! This is not warranty work as there appears to be nothing broken. Simply wanting the latest software without some cause is not going be to honored as warranty work by most dealers.

Now with the MP3 upgrade, as I recall that was being done as warranty work. Do a search for the PDF of the BMW document to make sure your car has the right set up for the upgrade. In most older cars that means having Navigation, at least up to a certain date...

Edit: Here's the document... If your car was built from SOP (start of production) till late Sept 2005, you will have to have Navigation to get MP3 working.

+1 it doesnt hurt to try it out, but just upgrading the software would not make MP3 capability work, there's actually an additional step they have to do to "enable" the MP3 function. So with tha being said if it doest work and your car meets the parameters of the SIB then you can just ask them to "enable" your MP3 functionality on your car under warranty.

Is it true that the Service Bulletin does not cover cars that do not have navigation?

That is correct. MY 2004 requires the Navigation option on the vehicle.
I read the technical service bulletin, as confirmed by my SA.

I beg your pardon, but mine is production date 05/05 (sold as 2006), it does not have NAV, and it plays MP3s.....
