My Ride: 07' 550i sport; Sapphire Black/Auburn; sport package; steptronic; navigation with R.T.T.I.; heads up; cold weather package; Logic-7; BMW MOST ipod kit; Motorola V3 snap-in adapter; rear heated seats and rear shades; anthracite headliner; sirrius sat. radio; M-aero kit; OEM style 166 Wheels with 245/35-19 front and 285/30-19 rear Michelin PS2s.
The title is misleading. My 550 sport was an incredible car. Dollar-for-dollar probably the best sports sedan period - including the M5 (until the DCT comes along).
Thing is, I am a very drastic person and I am also a purist at heart. I turned in the 550 this week and I wanted a sports car, not a sporty car. Let's be honest, BMW doesn't make a sports car. They build a little sports car into everything they do make though The M1 and Z8 were sports cars. So I got a 911 which I have wanted for many years now. I got my wife an X5 4.8 earlier this year, and after that we never used the 550 on the weekends. NEVER.
So here's the reason for the post. Friends and family keep asking me if I miss the 550??? and why I abandoned the brand???
Do this: Think of the last person you know who was excited about their new car...got it? Now, upon hearing the news, did you ask them if they missed their old car?
And the "abandoned the brand" comments hurt. If I went from an X5 to a Cayenne (when pigs fly) then I could see it. I'm just a little puzzled on where people are coming from.
Anyway. Just wanted to vent, and express to my fellow board members that my love of BMW in all its glory remains steadfast and true.
Regards, DRP

Fully understand your point.
Totally agree that BMW doesn't make pure sports cars. BMW is good at making sedans very sporty.

A 911 is 100% sports car. I will buy another one in the future. Enjoy your new wheels!

A 911 is one of the most amazing sports cars money can buy. I agree that BMW's strengths is making sedans be sporty and handle like a sports car. Given that I can only have 1 car and I need 4 seats, BMW is for me. If I could get a car with 2 (real) seats, a 911 would be at the top of my list.

I've been told everyone goes through the 911 phase. You own it for a while, but eventually grow out of it.
This is referring more to classic 911's though. I had a 66
I was actually torn between the 545 and a basic Carrera. I don't really need the big 5, it just always feels right to me. I'd like to own a modern 911 though. Maybe after the E60?
