I recently bought a 2007 550i with SMG and something similar happened to me. The car would not accelerate beyond a certain RPM. I took it to the dealer and they told me the air flow was being restricted by a plastic sandwich bag. Not sure how that got in there. Anyway, the acceleration has been great since.

Well, it's not usually that easy.
Go to the dealer/independent garage and get the fault codes for the DPF read.

It's strange that I don't have the fixed rpm maximum like 3000 and it wouldn't go any more. That would explain the particle filter problem, I think...But I have 1 gear full 5000, 2nd around 4100, 3rd around 3500, 4th around 3100...

Gear box is definately not in limp mode because 1) no AUT! 2) if it was AUT it would not take off in 1st it would stay in 3rd or 4th the entire time

I believe it could be the air filter. Check first. If that's not it, may be the MAFS. Dirty fuel probably would not do those exact symptoms.

Went to a service centar. Rubber pipe connecting the intercooler and the engine was broken. That caused particle filter to be full and unusable anymore  New pipe 300$ particle filter 3000$ labour xxx$
They will try to wash it, so we will see if I could use that filter again...
