Its a noise from the steering column.
The PUMA case for it says to flush the steering fluid and that makes the noise go away- at a $300 cost though.
New warranty will cover it but CPO will not.
I have it and decided to live with it because my CPO wont cover it.

I have the same problem. The dealer can't figure it out either. They took my steering column apart lubricated it and other things that helped for a while, but the noise is back. I read a bulletin and it said that it might be related to the anti roll stability system. Let me know if you figure anything out.

I had this problem and my CPO actually covered it. No charge at the dealer.

I had this and the dealer was instructed by BMW AG to put some additive into the steering fluid, that sorted it.

Might want to read this and maybe show it to your dealer:

I think that is more a noise on the interior at the steering wheel. mine is from the driver side wheel well area. an exterior swoop type sound.
