I put the key into the car ignition & pushed the start button but got no sound from the system, nothing played, the Radio, CD changer, CD in the radio. Took the key out put back in immediately, still nothing. I thought here we go a trip to the workshop.
Then after returning to the car after a one hour stop, did the same procedure and the radio came on as normal and has been fine since.
I used to have this intermittent issue with the E-Class that also has an electronic key, Im sure it has something to do with it, has anyone else experienced this?

I've had exactly the same thing happen to me, thought it was going to have to go back to the dealer, but when I came back to the car 60 mins later the thing worked fine and has never done it again.

It happened to me once... but it turned out I muted the darn thing the day before

I had the same type of problem with my 545i. In my situation about once a week I wouldn't get any sound after startup. No stereo, seat belt chime, nav. voice, PDC, or bluetooth sound. I don't see in your signature line that you have Logic 7 sound. Mine was related to the Logic 7 amp and it had to be replaced.

this just happened to me right now, thought I'd search and see if anyone else had a similar issue... I only have about a 1000 miles on my car, I will wait an hour and see if the sound returns before freaking out. btw, i don't have logic7

Same thing happened to mind around 3k miles-actually twice. First time I had hit the button for voice commands on the steering wheel and I guess that somehow disabled the stereo so it could take my comman but did not realize it.

Second time no clue what happened but I shut my car down and 2 hours later when I came back it was fine.

On an off note my alarm stopped working as well-but same thing. Shut it off and came back and find.

Seems like these cars are pretyy smart and can fix themselves. Kind of like a PC where a restart cures 90 percent of problems!

Was there a solution to this problem? Or was it let the car reset?

i have this problem currently and i notice that the "park" light/led on the shifter is not on anymore. Does anyone know if there is a fuse for these things not working to check? thanks in advance.

also noticed that the bluetooth was not connecting to the cell phone with all these things not working.

I had the same thing happen where no radio/sat/cd sound but voice commands worked. I called BMW assist and they suggested I turn the car off for 10 minutes and try again. It worked but it sounds like a Windows-type solution, REBOOT.

does any one know which fuse goes to the gear shift indicators (steptronic)? my park led does not turn on. and i have turned off the car for over an hour and over night, and still the same problem.
no sound from anything.
