Hi guys,
im thinking about getting the new turbo engine that is available in the 3 series, my question aside from the increase in power from an inline 6: what are the advantages and disadvantages as far as maintenance and life of the two engines are concerned.

1st of all it's also an inline-6. It just has 2 small turbos (not sequenitial) just a small blower each of the 3 cylinders

possible disadvantages over naturally aspirated inline-6

- fuel consumption and C02 output is higher
- it is more expensive to buy
- turbos fail and they can be expensive to replace (it's hard to know at this stage how reliable the N54 engine turbos will be)
- the turbo engine might be more prone to overheating (some E92 drivers have reported problems)
- the engine is slightly heavier (a tiny impact on handling)
- some people have said it doesn't sound as nice at idle (probably lean burn ... diesel like clatter)
- there is some turbo lag (although it is tiny). Some people hate this.

I have not heard about any turbo lag, thanks to the two small turbos.

A big pro is that the max torgue (400 Nm) that is availble from almost idling (1300 rpm).

Thanks guys,
i still think the natural aspirating inline 6 is one terrific engine and will wait until there is an increase in hp. my 06 is pretty smooth.

It's a turbo, so by design there is lag.
The question is how much or more importantly... is it noticeable.
In the case of the 335i, every review I have read has said the turbo lag was so small it was not noticeable.

I think JC summed it up nicely... It's there if you look for it!
