Regarding how to launch the vehicle:

Ultimately, what you want to do is 'pop the clutch'. That is, as quickly as you can take your foot off AND avoid getting the tires to screech too much. If you're holding the engine RPM's too high, too much time is lost from the tires spinning in place. Too low RPM's will bog down the engine and you won't have enough torque to get you moving quickly.

Several factors will determine where you should have the RPM's at launch: weight of your car (which includes yourself and other cargo), wheels and tires (dimensions and compounds), surface you're launching on, etc.

This is something that you'll have to play around with to discover at what point your tires grip or slip.

What's the fuss about driving a manual car?

In EU 95% (probably higher) of drivers drive manual cars and it's certainly not a "higher order skill"!!

I guess it's like all things - "management of change"...

Boy, did you misinterpret the OP's post.
NO one here is bragging or making a fuss. The OP has a genuine interest in learning how to drive a manual transmission. Who the fuck cares how many people drive a stick shift. Does that help the OP in his inquiry?

Evidently misinterpretation is rife.

My point is that if 80-year old women in their hordes can drive a manual car, then the OP can't really have a mountain to climb and should be encouraged by the fact that it ain't rocket science.

And then? (I assume you're facing uphill)... What happens after you have engaged gear (with the clutch pedal still depressed) and need to move your right foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator (gas) to increase revs as you let the clutch pedal out? Answer: you still roll backwards.

Don't forget to use the handbrake. Or, if you're really clever, let the clutch pedal out so the clutch bites to the point of stalling which should hold the car as you increase revs to move away smoothly...

Sheesh. I never knew there was so much in it...

ABC
My point wasn't to prevent the car from rolling backwards...it was to minimize burning of the clutch. And of course you had to use an extreme scenario (car facing uphill). The technique I described will still work if you're facing uphill.

I see you're really good at misinterpreting what people say.

So your method of teaching the OP is, "Well if 80 y/o women can do it, so can you,".....brilliant method!

You've taken my words out of context.
Here is my entire post:

All you really read was the last sentence.

You describe general good practice with a "backwards" enhancement. In my experience a car will only roll backwards in the circumstances you describe if the car in question is on an incline. Hence my "misinterpretation" that you were describing a technique involving an incline.
