I think the verdict is still out on the Dunlop RFTs. Mine is getting switched out at 7100 miles because of road noise. Their great on corners and I don't mind the stiffer ride.

Anyone with about 5000+ miles on the new Dunlop RFTs? 500 miles is still to new to conclude.

mine have 4500 without any problems; love them and minimal wear sofar; always used to run michelin pilot sports and still do on my old e39: dunlop rft are firmer (love it) and make the michelins seem wobly, wear seems to be equal, as is noise

So what are some good tires without the road noise? Wear and stiff ride is on the low priority, I just don't want the road noise.

You sound like I did with the RFT's. Up till 14,000 miles the wear was very good, handling was good and the safety factor is great. but the noise did me in. I had Michelin Pilot Sports on my 2001 330ci and got a flat doind 80 mph by the time I got to the shoulder of the road and stopped the tire was completely gone and so was the rim.(not repairable). The cost was $525.00 to replace them. With that in mind I don't think RFT's are that expensive.
Good luck
cheers

Hi Ray Hull,

I have no experience of new Dunlop RF tyres but there's two things I want to say.

1) Compering a new tyre to a old one is useless. Any new tyre is better than a used one!
Only 4 mm of the thread makes the tyre old!

2) I actually have nothing agaist RF tyres, except for city driving and driving on lousy roads.
In the city one notices the hardness and the weight of the tyre and on bad roads the tramlining
makes the RF tyres hazardous.
Also the RF's make more noice.

I have about 3 mm of the thread left (the same wheels and tyres have been on both my E60's)
so next spring I get new tyres - or a new car.

I'm sure the tech development will make the RF's better in time, but unless the hardness and weight
do not improve - I will not qualify RF tyres under my BMW.

Regards,
Riku

I wish you luck, Ray; however, remember that your runflats are "new." My replacement ones felt pretty good too.

Until exactly 8,000 miles after they were installed.

In the Oct 2006 issue of Car magazine, in the article on the new MINI (version 2.0), they quote Detlev Welters (senior product marketing guy) saying that the new MINI's chassis is much better matched [to runflats] and "we are on our fourth generation of run-flat tyre".

It doesn't say exactly which tyres will be fitted to the new MINI, but I would be very interested in understanding the "fourth generation of run-flat tyre" comment, and whether that also applies to tyres available for our E60s.

If run-flat technology has increased significantly, I might be tempted back ... but meanwhile I'm quite happy with my quiet, smooth, non-runflat Continental SC2s.
