My Ride: 2008 535i: June 6th start build, complete June 17th, at NY Port July 5th, at dealer July 10th, took delivery Friday July 13- Plantimum Bronze/Natural Brown Leather/Light Poplar, Sport Package, Sport Auto, Active Steering, Premium Package, CWP & PDC. Dinan Performance Software 384hp & 421 ft/lbs.

Sure there is a slight difference in the shape of the SAT shifter and the steptronic shifter but for the sake of the OP's question, I think they're the same. The big difference, obviously, is between these two new electronic shifters and the older style mechanical shifters...

You can probably follow some of my troubleshooting, etc. by reading the following posts:

Once I took the car to the dealer, they agreed with my theory that something was keeping the car awake. Once they looked at the fault codes, they saw a bunch from the shifter and BMW advised them to replace it.
