I have just taken delivery of 535d driven across europe, 1300 miles in two days. Very impressed. Can anyone tell me the purpose of the two red lights adjacent to the interior lights, also should I have been supplied with a key for the locking wheel nuts if so where is it likely to be?

Those two lights, if you're describing what I think you are, are simply to add some ambient lighting at night.
They basically shine down on the center console area and cast a useful amount of light in the interior without causing any glare or distraction to the driver. These lights aren't new to the E60 and are actually found on many cars these days...

My Ride: 2011 520dA coming up.
Congratulations, you're going to admire it more every day!
My key was found after one hour of extensive search
in the emtpty spare wheel compartment. After looking for quite some time I eventually looked in the manual and it told me it should be in the tool roll
So even RTFM didn't solve it this time.

Yes, the key is in the empty spare wheel compartment; just saw it for the first time yesterday when checking out the car before delivering it back to BMW.
