I thought the smaller turbo spun up nice and early compared with the 530d? I would of thought that would of helped quite a bit? (In theory - perhaps the practice is different?)
The first stage turbo spins up straight away and eliminates lag but doesn't give any more pull than the single turbo engine as the amount of torque available from 1,500rpm is the same. However where the 530d pull tails off at around 3,500rpm the 535's second stage turbo cuts in with the max torque/power available and gives superb pull right up to the redline. It provides petrol style driving! This is evident when you compare the auto 530d to the 535d in terms of 0-62 and 0-100mph. The difference up to 62 isn't much different 6.5 compared to 7.3 however 0 -100 is 15.0 compared to 19.4 (autocar figures).
So i suspect that the 231 engine comes only with straight exhausts...right?
The bent tailpipes were fitted to all 2003/early2004 cars. In mid 2004 BMW sorted the filter so they could fit straight chrome versions to all.
I have the figures from the 231Hp engine right here for the touring.
It brings the touring from 0-62Mph in 6.9s not 7.3s , so the difference to the 535d is quite small.

Seems like they need to upgrade the 535d as well, since the difference is getting smaller..
