You can find some details and some rather poor quality pictures (it looks 100% better in real life) :

I had it done by a Hartge bodyshop in the UK. Here some better pictures of the tips. Note that I only had the chrome tailpipes fitted and not the whole backbox shown in these pictures.

You can find a dealer who will fit them for you from Hartge E60 Page

I know exactly how you feel. Get rid of them - your car will look much better from the rear!

Is it ok to replace downturned? I thought it was because of the emissions why you couldn't?

Yes I noticed that - I thought that its possibly for a tow-bar.

Great car ... but what's that DK thing on the back? Do dealers force you have have their "stamp" on your car?

I've replaced my rear backbox with a Remus one, twin round chrome pipes, there's nothing in the backbox which effects emissons and there's no warranty issue with BMW.

I will post some picks when the cars clean....sound good too.

Gav530d,

Do you have any problems with dirt after changing to the straight line exhaust ??
Does the car get black around the exhaust area ??

I'm going to change to the same exhaust as Kjeld has on his 530d

I will get rid of my downturned tailpipes ASAP

Have a nice weekend

I made a picture with my car and Kjelds exhaust

I believe that the requirement for downturned pipes is placed on the manufacturer of the car - to satisfy emission standards. If they meer the newer standards then they can put straight pipes on.

I dont believe that there is any restriction on what the user does to it afterwards. In the UK - the MoT test does not cover the direction of the tail-pipes but concentrates on the level of emissions of the exhaust.

Some useful links :

Link to UK goverment MoT guidelines

Description of UK Mot Test for Exhausts

Description of UK MoT Tests for Diesel Emissions

I have been asured that it will not be an issue by the fitters.
