[/quote]Hrmm... that's right about the time I'll be getting over 1200 miles... Can't wait to wind this thing out - even limiting it to 4500 RPM and not putting the throttle down more than about a half an inch, the car -flies-.

My experience is three weeks long with new 530i engine plus SMG and M sport package. It's a brilliant piece of machinery. Smooth; full of power and torque ... I am waiting for my own run in period to pass and then to try all she can. I'll keep You posted on that.

The sound is amazing too. I'll see about borrowing a video camera and making some files.

My Ride: 2005 545i, Orient Blue, Black Interior, Sport Package, Satellite
I haven't driven the new 530i, but let me share my logic on my recent purchase with you.
The new 530i has 30 more HP but only 8 more ft lbs of torque than the old engine. The design of BMW engines emphasizes low end torque (ie. power a lower RPMs) better than virutally any other production engine for the same level of displacement. The new engine is better than the last in this area, but only slightly.
The problem is that 3 liters isn't much-- even an Acura TL has a 3.2 liter with technology similar to the valvetronic and it beats the new 530i in HP and torque at just about every point on the curve.
But given that you are getting ready to spend $50K plus on a BMW, and especialy if you are leasing and were already thinking of getting premium package and automatic or SMG transmission, the 545i is a better value. The resale will hold slightly better and typically you are buying a BMW for performance-- so why compromise?
Furthermore, the 545i is a GREAT deal right now because they will close out the '05s in a few months for the '06 model. If you are leasing, it is actually cheaper to lease a 545i than an '06 530i because the lease rates are being subsidized by BMW FS.
Go for a 545i. You won't regret it if you really like a more powerful engine.

Certainly up to each driver. I can say that there's no shortage of torque, and I've driven my fair share of overpowered V8s. I might have felt differently if I had been thinking of pairing it to a slushbox, but with the manual it's all I hoped it would be and more. I'm not concerned with the Acura or any of the other competitors. It should do as well or better in straight-line acceleration. The weight advantage of the 530i delivers a feel that these heavier cars can't touch - no matter how much horsepower they add to combat their heft.
