The 2009 5 series have the new iDrive hardware, but not software. As a poster above noted, the new iDrive software doesn't arrive until March builds, which are MY 2010.

Sorry my mistake. I received a brouchure from BMW UK today trying to sell me the E61 model. In it I noticed the car had the new Idrive and the screen shot was of the new system. I just assumed all new cars coming out now had them installed. I didn't pay much attention to the pictures of the centre console on cwt0926's car.

Ok just ran down to check on the brochure and I was right. The new idrive available from november 2008 onwards (in the touring brochure they sent me). All the pictures of the car dash shows the new idrive and software interface. Thats why i mistook any new car now in 2009 to have it.
