My Ride: 2006 525XI silver/grey
![Default](https://5series.net/forums/images/icons/icon1.gif)
New owner of a 06 525Xi with 57K miles and have a couple questions.
When starting to accelerate from a stopped position, the transmission shifts quickly into second gear causing a power lag. When pulling out into traffic, the quick shift and lag leaves the car limping through across the lanes which can be dangerous regarding oncoming autos. In that case, I have to hit the throttle hard to ensure this doesn't happen. Just curious as this doesn't make sense.
Also, when starting to accelerate from a stop position, the front end seems to be making a rumbling sound and then goes away when over 20mph.
Can I deactivate the auto door locking function as I find this to be a pain in the butt?
Does the heated steering wheel have a timer to shut the heat off?
Why in the heck does the radio keep the same volume when you shut it off and then back on minutes/seconds later? This function is pretty common with other auto manufacturers?
Initial thoughts on various comfort issues:
Steering - Awesome
Suspension - Awesome
Power - lacking
Steptronic manual shift - Awesome power difference versus auto/auto shift
In car storage - Horrible
Trunk release button - down to low to the ground, almost have to get out of the car to reach release button.

First of all welcome to the world of E60.
Regarding the poor acceleration from stopped I have this in my car also and i have a 525D, I have learned to live with it (but secretly wishing i drove a manual gearbox car).
The rumbling sound below is most likely the runflats, they are dreadful for comfort on the road.
You can switch off the auto lock function in the vehicle settings section of the iDrive.
Dont have the heated steering so i cant offer advice.
Do you mean that the radio doesnt keep the same volume or it does, mine keeps the same volume.
Power - Lacking: you did buy a 525i not a 545, 550 or M5.
The E60 is not perfect by a long shot but alongside other cars i still looks modern which is good considering it has been around since 2003.

The heated steering wheel/seats DO NOT shut off while driving unless you turn them off. In fact, during short trips the heated seats/wheel will automatically turn back on the next time you start the car.

I am sure you are aware of the steptronic DS mode which changes the shift patterns very aggressively on the 525, which really helps the lack of torque/hp. You may also want to try the transmission reset.

I cant say that my 525i has these symtoms of power lag, but mines a LCI May 09 model so it might only be pre-LCI models that suffer. Sure its not as powerful as the 530i but thats expected and does not bother me.

Thanks to all whom replied and I'll make the necessary updates.
Like all cars, one just needs to get accustomed to something new.

Picked my new 06 525XI up from the dealership last night. Since I recently acquired the car and noticed an oil leak on top of the engine I thought I would take advantage of the extended warranty. I noted the TSB regarding the exhaust valve lifters and got LUCKY. They replaced the lifters and noted the leak was caused do to error when removing the oil filter during the last oil change. Out the door for 53.00 deductable and can't notice any changes so I guess the work went as planned.
I was given a one loaner and was happy to drive the 2010 528Xi which was noticeably faster and sporty at the same time. I took advantage of the Steptronic transmission and zipped through some back roads. I noticed that if you run the 5 series in the 'power band' range, the auto is very snappy.
Nice to have mine back and I have two outstanding questions about my 525.
1. My active steering feels stiff and as this isn't a big issue I'm just wondering is anyone else is experiencing as well? The loaner had standard power steering and I could turn the steering wheel with one finger. It's hard to do that with my 06 525.
2. I have a low groaning sound coming from the front end until I get up to 20MPH and the sound then disappears. I have the stock Continental ConTouring tires. The loaner was very quiet.

AFAIK Active Steering is NOT available on AWD/xi model ...
... only on RWD/i model. At least it's not an option in my 5-series catalog from BMW.
