According the the attached ordering Guide the 2010 5-series (e60) will have the "new iDrive system, which debuted on the new 7 series". The new iDrive actually came out first on the 3-series but the display screen and a few other specifications are better in the new 7-series. So the question is....is the e60 getting the better 7-series features, or what is now in the new 3-series?

That is correct....however as a matter of fact, I believe the late model 2009's already have the updated I-Drive versions (CIC over CCC), you do a search there are already some members who have posted pics of their cars with the new Idrive. I believe it started with March 09 delivered cars

Unfortunately I think it is only those cars produced as of March 2009 - and that makes them 2010s I think. So yes, the 2009s had the new controller/buttons, just not the CIC.

I believe the 2009 3 and new 7 series both use the same iDrive (the CIC) - but the 7 might have a bigger screen.

Correct. I've got a 2009 550i Sport. Mine has the newer iDrive controller and buttons but, alas, the only DVD-based operating system. The 2010 E60 with nav gets the new hard drive-based iDrive.

Get my 530D SE Business Edition end of this week / early next week (dealer just informed me the car has arrived) and it has the hard drive sat nav & new controls will post pics once I have it.
You can definately tell that a. car is in run out phase and b. the economic climate is affecting the trade, this car was ordered week before Easter as a factory build and has already arrived back in 2005 I had to wait 3.5 months!

The new 2010 E60 I-drive does not have all the features that are present in the new 7 series. For example, it does not have an online Owner's Manual - damn, I will have to read the New York Times in the morning rather than perusing the Manual!

However, since my car did not have the updated printed owner's manual, I cannot compare every feature for feature to the 7.

I can say that it is fast, the layout of the menus that I have found are better. For example, one can search for 'information' on the 'destination', 'current location', or 'new destination' by category and distance or name; and search 'contacts' by name as well as scrolling.
