My Ride: 95 M3 CAI, chipped, pulleys, Xbrace, doesn't give headaches every time I start up!
04 545i all the goodies INCLUDING HEADACHES!
Got the oil leaks fixed. Both valve cover and timing gaskets with new plugs and vent pipes installed was $1335.00. I think the cost was reasonable considering the other quote from the stealer. I would highly recommend Carroll Autowerks in the N. Florida area if you need service or repair work. Scott seams knowledgeable about our cars and is not in the business to rip us off.

No, You don't need to drop the engine to replace the valve cover gaskets. It is not an easy job, but I did it myself on my 05 545i.
Common leak sources ;-) upper timing chain cover, valve cover, solenoid o-rings, camshaft sensors o-ring....
Check also for coolant leaks (vent pipes, temp sensor, valley pan)
I can give you more details if you are interested.

Any other places besides the oil pan where the leak may occur? My indy says that there is a gasket in the lower right hand side of the engine where the alternator bolts to that is a common failure.

GL - see that you replaced your own valve cover gaskets on a 545i without dropping the engine. What secrets can you share so that I can finish the job on my 05 545i. I've removed almost everything around the driver side cover but, am getting stuck when trying to pull it out - I can't seem to get past the small spaces and the attached spark plug tubes.

Had the valve covers and timing cover gaskets, and pressure switch O ring replaced and still have an oil leak.
