I am going with Dunlop M3 winter tires on my 123 wheels -- tires are sitting in the garage, but not mounted yet. I went with 225/45VR-18. This is not TireRack's recommended size, which is the stock 245/40-18, but I couldn't see going with a tire that wide for winter use only. The height is right on and no problem with the rim width, so I think it will be a great winter size. Now if I was going with an all season tire and expecting year round use, I would stay with the stock size.
To have the best of both worlds you really need 2 sets. Now I just have to pick out my new summer tire/wheel combo!

Get some 17" wheels and winter tires and save your summer wheels.
Plus, you won't have to pay $80 twice a year to have them swapped over.

My Ride: 2007 530i SMG Jet Black/Beige Sport/Prem/Cold, comfort, split, shades.
I have the same setup. I went on E-bay and picked up 17" 525 sport wheels...I don't know the #.
Go to Tirerack, I got he Continentals. GO WITH WINTER TIRES do not go with all seasons, you'll regret it.
One thing you need to keep in mind, there are TPM sensors and transponders in the wheels.
If you replace the wheels and tires, you'll either need to reset your TPM or purchase the sensors(in the valve stem) and the transponder units (one in each wheel). I did the latter,$$$. Your valve stem is color coded and has to match the ones on your summer wheels...hence the wheel needs to be removed to check because color band is located on the inside. Valve stem replacement was about 20$/per, and the transponding unit is about $50/per.

I heard good things about Dunlop M3. I have them on my passat and they work perfectly.
Now JPJ i want to ask you if you know that 225/45 will suit my 135M rim also. I suspect the width of the rim is the same (8"). Thank you.
PS:I also share your pov. Winter tires have to be as narrow as possible, and why not as tall as possible since this is a plus for confort and we don't need too much cornering ability/speed in winter.
