Need new alternator!

I was driving home the other day when I noticed noise from the engine compartment. At first I thought it was a bad belt but the dealer says the alternator needs to be replaced.
What next? I've owned a lot of cars but this is the first time I've had to replace the alternator on a car with 25,000 miles on the odometer. Has anyone else out there had to do this so soon?
I'm really getting tired of bringing this car in for service.
