My check engine light just came on. I turned the car off and turned it back on to see if there was small glitch or something... Nothing... Still on. I turned it off for about 4 hours and when I came back, still on...
My iDrive tells me that everything is ok. Engine oil, brakes, oil level, even the system check says its ok...

Has anyone experienced this? Oh, I do have 3,000 miles left before I change the oil. Do you think that's it? But my iDrive did not alert me at all.

Please help before I get ripped off at the dealer.

Is your gas cap secured properly?

Well that's always the first thing to check...

If it were loose or not sealed properly, the light will come on -- once the cap is secured, the light doesn't always go off immediately. It can take a while for it to go back out.

If it's anything else, you might need the dealer to connect to the car and download whatever fault is stored in memory.

Much obliged sir... I appreciate it. I will let you know if the light goes out then.

Check engine can come on for faulty o2 sensor or other emission related stuff. If was a glitch or gas cap you can unplug the battery for a few minutes and it should clear itself. However, if it comes back on it is dealer time or take ot to a place that cane read obd II codes.
