Car and Driver tested all season vs. winter with 4 different Michelins. The all seasons out performed the Pilot Alpin and the X-ice in dry and wet in freezing temperatures. It was only in snow and ice where they excelled. The Pilot Sport A/S that they tested pulled .89g's dry and .88 wet in 23 degree weather. The Pilot Sport Alpin PA3 did .87 dry and .83 wet. The braking also saw a favor to the A/S. They now have the Pilot Sport A/S Plus which is even better on snow and ice. If you break it down, most of the northeast will only see 15 days a year where you might actually have to drive on snow. Most places I have lived, they start salting before the snow and plow right away. It is usually a wet road that I am driving on. Like NYC530xi said, maybe Canada is a different story, but the OP is in CT. wher they plow pretty quickly. And as far as AWD not helping with handling and breaking? How many lake racers are running rwd? AWD definitely helps with handling. Braking I will mostly agree, but the AWD will help decelerate the front wheels some to keep you from having to brake as hard and will help steer out of a situation more easily. You can blame driver over confidence on the AWD not helping.
