Went on a demo ride today (in a 645i, very nice ) to have a demo on how the navigation system works (the dealer tells me the 645 and 545 systems are the same) ...

My question is (which the dealer had no answer for me) if a location that I'm at (perhaps a farm house in the country) was not in the Navigation database, and if I'm physically at the location, can a "save" this location, and give it a name? Will this be stored in the system so that my wife can now look it up in the system and find her way to the same place I had previous been so that I don?t have to explain to her how to get there?

Also, will updated Navigation DVD?s be made available in the future for people who have older out of date version of the DVD?

That's correct.

Navteq is updating the data constantly and releases a new disc at least twice a year.

Iceman, you are the "man", Thanks ...

The updated DVDs, I'm assuming BMW doesn't give these away do they? How do you get new DVDs and how much do they cost?

I wish they would give them away for free, but unfortunately we have to buy them.
The dealers should be able to order them, or you should be able to get them from Navteq.
Wasn't there a thread about that in which it says you can also get it through edonkey?
Anyways, it is possible to burn a copy... You just need to find a source to d/l it, or share with somebody else...

Ofcourse. You can save the cuurent location and then add it to your destination list (temporary) or the address book (permanent). In the address book you can scroll to name click down and edit the name to say " Janet's house'.

Only one minor detail -- the address book is only as "permanent" as the current software you are running. When the dealer does an upgrade, bye bye address book!

11x to 12x. It was still there. My Ed addresses were still in the car when I took delvery in the US.
12x to 13.2. Lost all settings and addresses.
13.2 to 13.3 They were still there. I think it just depends whether they decide to re-install or upgrade.

Interesting...

Based on the frequency of problems related to software loads, I'm not so sure the technician has too many choices as to whether or not the address book, radio presets, etc. are preserved. You may be on to something in that they remain intact if the load/upgrade is successful but since many times the process fails, maybe the techs have no choice but to re-install and blow out the saved settings?

That's right. They have no choice. Even the settings for the transmission (shift points) are lost when they update the software.
BMW is currently trying to find a way to let the dealer save all those settings before a software update and put them back in the new software after the upload. But nobody knows if they will ever be able to do so...

my last service was to install BT, and the computer crashed 3-4 times, then the tech disconnected the car battery for 6 hours to totally rebuild software, and of course, the addresses in nav were gone.

It'd be great to have them on some kind of flash memory which never dissapeared unless given specific instructions to empty itself. Then maybe the info would always remain between updates.

It also seems odd that the idrive computer is so slow in its processing power and ability to be updated at service. This really seems 'penny-wise and pound-foolish' since the dealers are spending tons of time to update software many time hours upon hours.

(my son wanted to add this below-)

riding in the BMW is a blast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
