I think op was referring to upgrading his idrive to the more updated version. Possibly from non navi unit or the pre-lci version. I learn to live with my slow pre-lci version for couple years already. No point of forking that much cash just for something a faster, not knowing how long I will keep the car.

I personally use gmy android phone for navigation, I hate the navigation for our e60 and very rarely do I actually use it. So to me personally seems like a waste.

This looks like an upgrade to existing module which is not the same as retrofitting to the car which never had navigation and does not have cable harness supporting it..If this is true - the job would be much bigger - likely not worth the trouble
And currently you can buy stand alone navigation which will not be integrated but they are usually much cheaper and superior to any BMW installed in terms of operation.. BMW integrated navigation is super user unfriendly...I have one but half of the time use my Android phone. Wife drives X5 with navi but uses her Garmin. So If I had to pay for BMW navi as an option - I would not pay a penny.

If you are going to upgrade to the CIC setup, bear in mind you need to swap it out everytime you bring in your car for warranty work or you'll risk voiding your warranty. Well, unless you dealer could care less or you're already our of warranty, then you should be fine with it.
