My Ride: 2005 E61 520d SE (it's got Active Steering which I'm having trouble getting used to!)
All of a sudden i got a "please insert navigation dvd" message when i went to use it the other day. Then the next day all seemed ok it showed all my addresses etc but when i went to plan a route it eventually came up with the same message. I then tried a cd and some tracks played and others didnt and now it wont even recognise there is a cd in there! Has this happened to anyone else? Any idea how much a new dvd drive is sounds like its knackered to me!?

same here.....
mine suddenly restarted whilst driving but came back all ok but over the next few days it went down hill and kept on restarting everytime the car went over a bump. Now the DVD drive (e60 with business NAV) won't recognise any media - i drive simply reports "media not recognised".
I took the car down to a local specialist who duly advised after some probing that a new DVD drive would be required at a cost of ~?1600 for parts. his recommendation is not to bother replacing the unit as the cost was simply not justifiable.
personally, i feel lost without my MP3 playback and built in NAV.
not sure of where to go from here!

Take it out, take it apart and replace the part that's giving you an issue > Laser Lens...fairly simple task

apologies in advance for my ignorance but is it possible to source individual parts for replacement? the specialist (at least in my opinion)said that it is not possible and consequently only a full unit replacement would suffice. Moreover, taking things apart with no skills or knowledge scares the hell out of me.

if you're just going to replace the drive unit, scour ebay for a used CCC and just take the drive out of it. you shouldn't need recoding to do that.
besides, I now need to find someone with the right knowledge to fit it in - it all sounds so simple but every time i try one of the garages, i seem to be coming out of it with a list of things to do than a list of things successfully fixed ;-)
