For the past few months the nav system would unpredictably shut down with a "please insert DVD disc" message. If the car is left off for a while (typically overnight) the disc is then recognized and the nav works just fine. My local dealer did diagnostic testing on the system last month (of course, at the time it was working fine) and said everything's OK. It's back in the shop (another story, brake problems related to the recall, they're fixing it for free) and my service guy says I need a new DVD drive. The cost to get a new dvd drive and install it is $1,300. My car is almost 6 years old and approaching 100,000 miles so we're way out of warranty. Part of me just wants to use a nav program on my iphone and part of me wants to get it fixed. Any thoughts or suggestions?

hmm if your looking to keep the car then yes i would consider it, if it was something you'd be letting go off in the next 6months then no i wouldnt bother and just settle for the iphone nav (co-piolot) is pretty good! $1300 on a 6 year old car with 100k miles *nods head*

If the the drive includes the CCC unit (I think it is a assembly) I would do it.

yeah, you should do it. even if you don't use the NAV yourself, when you sell the car and tell a potential buyer the NAV/DVD doesn't work, it's going to be a huge drawback. for people that don't know BMW's well, when they see that little screen in the idrive they think the only reason it is there is for NAV. take NAV functionality away and they are going to to think the car is missing a lot, never mind the fact that the sooner you get it done, the more you can use it yourself.

Are you aware that you can get the DVD drive as a sparepart so you don't need to change the complete unit..? It is around 100 Euro here in Europe.

Before you go to the expense of replacing hardware have you tried a different DVD ... sometimes when i use a copy of my original nav dvd i get that an error message to insert the DVD. Just a thought ... maybe the DVD disc (and not the drive) is bad - it could happen.

I had my DVD drive fixed for about $1600 at about 110,000 miles and now have 148,000 miles on my 2005 5451a Yes, nothing like the convenience of that big built in screen. No regrets.

I 've had this message also. More and more often. till the moment the DVD was not read anymore at all.

I drove several months like this, and I was considering to replace also the DVD unit. Then a friend of mine told me to buy a "cleaning lens DVD". That cost me 5 euros. It's a DVD disk, with a very little brush of 1cm long, in the middle of the burned zone. I've inserted this DVD into my navigation drive, heard the drive trying to read it. when the sound (or rotating noise) was off, I took if out, and put it in again. Until the disc was not rotating anymore.
Then I removed it and put back in the navigation DVD (which is not an original) and....it works PERFECT since (for more than one month now).

So I recommend this type of "cleaning CD " before any other attempt...

I know I'm in search for information and a bit off track. If you do not use the navig often, would you recommend to keep the dvd sw off the dvd drive?
