Is the tire RFT? It should be OK on regular tire ... as long as not in an angle or sidewall ... check w/ the local tire shop to confirm.

Unless it's in the sidewall or the nail is too close to the sidewall, it's perfectly OK to patch.

Yes, you can patch it. Just make sure they do a patch from the inside and not just a plug. I'm actually going to have this done this afternoon after discovering over the weekend that my rear passenger side tire was slowly loosing air (~5 psi/day). After inspecting it, I see there's some kind of metal object in middle of the tread. Atleast the rim was not cracked which caused me a problem last year. Fun fun....

I can't believe people are actually asking these questions.
Remember, the only stupid question is the one you don't ask. Besides, that's kind of what this forum is for isn't it? To help us get more informed about our cars and how to take care of and mod them?

A patch is absolutely fine to fix a nail hole provided that the nail is not in the sidewall. In fact, shortly after I got my car, I got a nail hole in a rear tire and I had it patched. I have driven with it ever since -- including on a number of meets where I have pushed to tires right to their handling limits (such as the mountain hairpins on Pennsylvania State Route 125) and my tire with its patch has performed flawlessly.
