Default N62 Upper chain cover gasket replacement

Hello,

My 550i with 59k miles has an oil leaking on a left upper chain cover gasket. Is it possible to change only this gasket or better do it with valve cover gasket? I found that one forum member did it for 545i. https://5series.net/forums/diy-do-yo...3/#post1411860
Thank you!

The timing covers can be done separately . Get an inspection mirror and take a good look at the valve cover gaskets , if the are signs of leakage , might as well do the valve covers too .

Definitely, in this case I've ordered the endoscope. Thank you.

Regarding the picture from the realoem for N62 engine, it's impossible to replace the upper timing cover gasket without removing the alternator bracket or valve cover or I'm wrong?

It can be done. There are 8 torx bolts that hold the upper timing cover to the engine. The 2 bolts at the bottom also secure a bracket that holds the oil cooler lines (only on E60s with the oil cooler installed, i.e. 550i). Those metal lines are rigid and block direct access to removing the 2 bolts. The bracket is held closed by a screw that can only be accessed from the bottom, it is upside-down. However, the left frame rail is in the way, so you need to jack up the engine. Once you open the bracket, it will allow the oil cooler lines enough wiggle room so you can remove those 2 torx bolts. The alternator bracket appears to be in the way of removing the upper timing cover, but you'll find BMW left you just enough room to pull the cover out, also evidenced in the opening of the bracket that allows you direct access to remove the bottom corner torx bolt.

Alls I did was pull out the two alternator bolts , shift the alternator over . Used a 1/4 socket and extension , and had just enough space to get that bottom corner bolt out .

Guys thanks for your help.
I decided to do the both valve cover gasket and upper timing cover gasket. If i understood correctly that i don't need to relearn the valvetronic for the limit stops. Because I'll not change the mechanical position of any valvetronic assembly components. Am I right?

No you shouldnt have to but I thought the relearn process was only turning they key on and off twice keeping it in the on position for 30 secs both times. So if you want to be safe just do the process anyway.

Someone correct me if I am wrong
