Leak from head gasket, on the other hand, results in coolant leaking in to the engine. You won't see any visual signs outside except the white smoke from the exhaust. This can get expensive job to replace head gasket.

Crap...Looking at my engine from before it seems I need both gaskets since I also notice oil seeping from the top.

- Because of the cold weather (time of year), I would judge the condition of your coolant related gaskets by the amount of coolant you are replenishing (not the smoke). If you're loosing coolant and it doesn't have an external leak or a bad radiator cap (steam) - then you have an internal leak (possibly a head gasket). Otherwise it's condensation.

- Oil related leaks - try tightening the valve cover and other bolts first.

I wouldn't recommend folks to just go ahead and tighten those aluminum bolts without the use of torque wrench. There is a specific procedure to torque those bolts.

Head gasket is between the valve train/camshafts and the cylinders/pistons. Basically the top third of the motor. It's a big job to replace the gasket and an even bigger job if the head is warped as it will require machining to make it level and true again.
