This is funny. I was test driving a 530i about a week ago, and when we started it up the salesman made a point of pointing out the lifter noise. In his words, this was 100% normal after the car sits for a little while. I thought it was weird that he mentioned it because I didn't really notice it at all. Now I know why.

Oh great ! I just purchased a 530 sport wagon after the HPFP fiasco on the 535i.... I can't wait to find out that is ticking and needs a new head...
I think you all may need to look for my body in the back yard under the dog wood tree , if my wife finds out...

That is not ticking that is the normal sound of your engine. Lifter tick is a sound that is clearly a tick tick tick tick really fast-sounds just like an exhaust manifold leak if you have ever heard that. But that is not it
Sounds pretty much like an old diesel. If you car doesn't sound like this at all times, you don't have a lifter problem. Cold engine in cold weather, a certain amount of ticking is to be expected and if it goes away after a few minutes, you have no problems.

The N54's already kind of sound like that but the "Tick Tick" is a bit faster...

Congrats on the 530 and don't worry too much - E60 is a pretty reliable car in general

I have a 2004 545I with 68k on the clock. It had a slight tapping noise on start up when I got it at 53K. the ticking noise went away when the car warmed up. When it got cold this winter, the noise became much louder. Now it is getting loud fast, you can hear it all of the time, even inside the car with the radio on. It changes with engine speed and goes away when decelerating. A friend of mine who is a very knowledgeable engines guy said he thought that it sounded like the GM piston slap debacle and to read the plugs and check for scored cylinder walls if any of the plugs were oily / sooty.
Here are the plugs:
spark plugs
This what the car sounds like:
Well the shop has the pan off and when you look up into the bottom of cylinder 6 the walls are severely scored. That would explain the low compression and to oily plug. Too bad the dealer was clueless even though I gave them the spark plug picture and the compression data.... Bummer. I will try to start a new post with all of the details tonight.

My engine ticks badly when it?s cold outside and the engine is cold. I brought it in once to have the dealer check the motor and of course it was 70 degrees that day so said they couldn't hear anything. I store my car in the winter but in the fall it definitely ticks badly and I'm almost out of my new car warranty, I have 48k miles. Is there a BMW bulletin or something I can put in front of the service people to get my engine fixed?
The car runs fine, has lots of power but does tick badly when cold. I have the CPO warranty so if the motor craps out I figure I'm covered but the ticking is annoying.

I had the same problem and it delayed my trip to the dealer by at least 8,000 to 10,000 miles.
Tell them you want to see the plugs. If you have a black one it could be scored cylinder walls which is very serious. It could be a number of other things though, intermediate valve levers, lifters, one of the accessories on the front of the motor etc.
If one of the plugs is black have them do a compression test.
Deal with it now, it won't get better or easier to get bmw to help you.
